Six members of the Waverly Drama Musical, "Little Shop of Horrors", toured district schools on Friday.
Seniors Shelby Bauer, Tucker Flodman and Ryan Searle, juniors Bailey Neben and Makayla Siefker and Sophomore Hailey Dunn performed selected numbers of the show at WMS, Eagle and Hamlow Elementary Schools.

The purpose of this tour was to provide District 145 students with the opportunity to be exposed to the theatrical arts, an opportunity that precious few students get before they reach high school. The younger students found themselves amazed at the theatrical magic of the Audrey II puppets ("How are you DOING that?! How is his mouth moving?"), while the middle schoolers were impressed by the vocal strength and quality of the performers' voices.
Ryan Searle, the voice of Audrey II, interacts--and snaps--at the students on their way out.
Eagle Elementary students get the opportunity to talk to and touch the Audrey II plan after the assembly.
Another great opportunity the Drama Department had was to open the eyes of the possibilities drama has to offer all students.
Members of the WMS choirs and bands had the opportunity to engage in a question and answer session with the cast and crew. During this conversation, the students learned that the students who take part in theatre come from every walk of life and background. The band students were able to relate to Bailey, a Varsity Marching Band member; singers saw themselves in Hailey and Makayla, both members of Show Choir; even the boys--traditionally the most likely to avoid performing arts because it's not "manly"--realized they could be star athletes and star actors at the same time, just like Varsity Basketball player and state track competitor Ryan and Varsity Golfer Tucker.
Mrs. Kornfeld explains to her middle schoolers different facets of being part of a musical production.
As a department, we hope to see scads of these young students at the show Friday, Saturday or Sunday. And, with a bit of luck, we'll see more and more of these students getting involved in drama as they get older.
